Conference Summary and Outcomes

On behalf of the Health Education Council and Break Free Alliance, thank you to everyone who attended and/or supported our third national conference, Promising Practices to Promote Tobacco-Free Active Living and Healthy Eating in Low Socioeconomic Status Communities in Arlington, Virginia, April 28-29, 2014.

The 381 participants in this year’s conference represented 42 states, Sweden, Australia, England and Canada. A big thank you to Break Free Alliance Coordinating Council members, moderators, Health Education Council staff, our conference planning committee and conference planning consultants Mike Fulton from the Asher Agency and Katherine Winans for helping to make this conference a success!

Our plenary speakers included Dr. Steven Markowitz, Professor and Director, Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, Queens College, The City University of New York; and Dr. Jeannette Noltenius, Former Director, National Latino Tobacco Control Network. We’d also like to thank our generous sponsors: the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers, the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living, Pfizer, Legacy, the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, ClearWay Minnesota, and the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, Division of Tobacco Prevention.

And attendees raved about the jazz group that performed during our conference – thanks again to MASFIK (Me and Some Folks I Know)!
